Thomas Richard Barry

April 23, 1945 - September 26, 2017

Lovingly known to friends and family as Rick, (or Ranger Rick) Thomas Richard Barry passed away on Tuesday September 26, 2017 after a long battle with Multiple Sclerosis and COPD. Rick will be so deeply missed by his family and friends.

Predeceased by his father Thomas Richard Barry.

Survived by his mother Evelyn (Tracy), his loving wife Gail, children Kim (Jonathan) and Kyle (Anna), grandchildren Eden, Noah, Thomas and Emily, his brother Stan (Louise), sister-in-law Karen (Rick) as well as his nephews Ryan, Arden (Alyssa ), Jody, and niece Tina (Tom).

Rick was born in Calgary, Alberta on April 23 1945, while his father was stationed there during his service in the Air Force.

Soon after, his family returned to the Cowichan Valley where Rick lived for most of his 72 years.

In his early years he was a firefighter for UBC. He soon became a Paramedic with the BC Ambulance Service and returned to Duncan where he served for over 12 years, as well as a First Aid Attendant and Security Guard at Catalyst Paper.

He and Gail owned the fun store, The Dayley Planet, for over 25 years.

Rick was a Lieutenant in the Duncan Volunteer Fire Department, as well as an Honourary Lifetime Member, which he achieved after 25 years of dedicated service. Here he developed lifelong friendships and wonderful memories.

Rick gladly gave countless hours of his time to the community by volunteering as a Referee for Duncan Minor Hockey, an Umpire for Little League, and a Little League coach.

He loved to play and watch sports of all kinds and was an avid Cowichan Valley Capitals and Toronto Blue Jays fan.

He loved to spend time with his friends and family and adored his children and grandchildren and was immensely proud of them.

He travelled extensively with his wife and special friends, known as "The Six Pack". He even travelled through Guatemela and Belize in a wheelchair.

Rick's friendly personality, lighthearted demeanor, honesty and gentle nature will be forever cherished and remembered and by his loved ones and many who knew him.

The Family would like to extend its sincere appreciation and gratitude to Dr. Danny Kuo and the staff of Cowichan District Hospital for the exceptional care and compassion they exhibited during Rick's time there.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Rick's honour on Saturday October 14th at the Duncan Volunteer Fire Department Hall at 2 P.M.

In lieu of flowers, if you choose, donations may be made to the BC Lung Foundation or the MS Society.
