Thomas Michael Wallace passed away peacefully at home in the company of his family Saturday September 28. Mike, as he was known to his family and friends, was born in Creston in 1961 and moved to the valley in 1965.
Predeceased by his father, Thomas Reid Wallace, he is survived by his mother, Wendy Wallace, his stepfather, Keith Fawcett, his sister, Sandy Franceschini (Gary), stepsister Susan Fawcett (Sandy), stepbrother, Ian Fawcett, niece, Jill Franceschini (Nathan), nephews Kyle, Kevin, Justin (Danielle) Franceschini, and numerous Aunts, Uncles and cousins.
And of course his devoted canine companion, Harris.
Throughout his life Mike was deeply interested in cars, thus it was not surprising he spent much of his working life in the car part industry. One of the highlights of those years was having the chance to experience driving race cars at tracks in Ontario and in Las Vegas.
Later he became involved with miniature horses, owning two and taking part in fall fairs, parades and fun driving events. Mike and his mother spent many happy afternoons and evenings driving their horses through the trails at the fairground.
Family meant everything to Mike and he would do anything for them. He was especially delighted when his sister and Gary produced three wonderful children and he quickly became a devoted uncle, willingly changing diapers and babysitting. Over the years he became like a second father to Jill, Kyle and Kevin.
In 2015 he made his first trip to Scotland, the birthplace of his father, accompanied by his sister, Sandy. There he fell in love with Scotland and its history, which became a passion from then on. In 2017 he and Sandy made a second trip, this time accompanied by Kyle and Jill, which served to deepen his love affair with Scotland.
Mike will be remembered most for his humour, kindness, his generosity and willingness to give of his time and knowledge to anyone who asked. Throughout his five year struggle with cancer he remained kind, positive and courageous. Even as he neared the end of his struggle his concern was still for the nurses, doctors and others who cared for him. He was unfailingly friendly, and tried to make everything as easy for them as possible. One of his last acts was to repay a nurse's extra kindness with chocolates and flowers.
Always the family caregiver, his overwhelming concern throughout his illness and especially in the last few months was that his family would be okay when he was no longer here to care for them.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Mike at the Royston Community Hall, Sunday October 6, at 4 pm. Everyone is welcome and the family is hoping that many will come prepared to share their memories of Mike. Anyone wishing to share a memory but who would prefer not to speak is welcome to bring something in writing. Those not able to attend are encouraged to share their memories on Mike's online memorial at www.piercysmtwashingtonfuneral.com
