In Loving Memory ~
Beloved mother, grandmother, and mother-in-law Shirley passed away peacefully at the Nanaimo Regional Hospital on February 21, 2022, at the age of 88.
A life-time resident of Ladysmith, Shirley was born to parents Agnes and Hamilton Allan in the Ladysmith Hospital on January 4, 1934. She grew up in their home on Victoria Crescent (now Dogwood Drive).
After high school graduation, she worked as a telephone operator before marrying Alfred Highfield in 1953. They spent 54 years together until Al passed away in 2007.
Al and Shirley built their first home on a lot off the Island Highway about two miles south of town and became part of a small neighbourhood. They had the great fortune to have long-lasting friendships with their neighbours. In 1994, they moved into a home closer to the water and were once again surrounded by friendly, caring neighbours.
Shirley was a gentle, caring person who enjoyed a quiet life and always wanted those around her to be comfortable and content. She enjoyed family camping trips and travels to the Rockies, watching Coronation Street, and keeping up to date on news of Queen Elizabeth.
She always remembered family and friends' birthdays and had a special place in her heart for animals.
She is predeceased by her siblings and their spouses, Nancy and Doug Matson, Isabel and Ian McMurtrie, and Victor and Maureen Allan.
Deeply loved and missed by her children Clark Highfield and Dianne Thomas, her son-in-law Brian, and grandchildren Philip (Mela) and Alex (Alyssa), she is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
The family is grateful for the care and compassion provided by the NRGH doctors, nurses, care aides, and staff; the nurses at the Ladysmith Community Health Centre; and Dr. Timothy Britton-Foster.
A private family gathering was held at the Ladysmith Cemetery.
Mom was always there for us when we needed her, and we will always be grateful for her unconditional love.
May she rest in the arms of the Lord.
