January 15, 1932 - November 7, 2021
Sheila Ruth Wyper (née Kearns) passed away peacefully on the evening of November 7, 2021.
Sheila is predeceased by her husband Allan and son-in-law Dave Morris. She is survived by her brother Peter Kearns; children Heather Morris (and Mark Docherty), Sally (and Brad) Arkell, and Michael (and Natasha) Wyper; grandchildren Meagan (and Trevor) Richardson, Samantha (and Mitch Leask), Adam (and Jaz Allison) and Rebecca (and Marcus Goulden) Morris, Jason, Allan, Jose, Bradley, and Isaiah Arkell, Stephanie (and Matt) Austin, Kieran and Aiden Wyper, and a multitude of great grandchildren.
Sheila was born in Earl's Colne, Essex, UK, on January 15, 1932. She attended Highcliffe Academy at Weston-Super-Mare. Her family moved to Lympstone, where she developed a love for sailing and, after a trip to Norway, skiing. She moved to Vancouver to pursue these passions in 1958. There she met the next love of her life, Al. They married and, after moving to the Okanagan Valley, had three children.
Sheila loved the outdoors, particularly canoeing and fishing. She and her family spent many weekends (and weeks) enjoying these activities in the wilderness of BC's interior.
Sheila was always devoted to service; she volunteered as a skating monitor and guide leader, even earning her Bronze Cross swimming certification so the Guides would have a lifeguard while at camp. She became one of the first ambulance attendants in Lumby, eventually becoming the unit officer.
After moving to Duncan, she worked as a matron for the RCMP, quietly knitting while watching the female prisoners to ensure their safety. Following this, she went back to school, earning her Home Care Worker certificate (at age 60!).
After a few years supporting those in need of help in their homes, she retired. Sheila, however, did not let grass grow under her feet. She and Al became very active in the B.P. Guild, Hearts in Motion, the Duncan Walking Club, and the Cowichan Valley Church of the Nazarene. Throughout it all, she was an inspiration and source of loving support for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by those whose lives were enriched by knowing her.
Thank you to the doctors, nurses, and care aides at the Cowichan Regional Hospital for the comfort and care they provided Sheila during her last six weeks of life. Special thanks to Dr. Dan Philippson for the outstanding, compassionate medical care he gave her for the past 36 years, and to her granddaughter Meagan, who has been a constant source of support and companionship for Sheila, particularly over the past seven years since Al passed away.
Finally, we would like to thank Pastor Wayne Lee of the Cowichan Valley Church of the Nazarene for his spiritual guidance, which culminated in daily visits to Sheila while she was in the hospital.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 16th @ 2 p.m. at the Cowichan Valley Church of the Nazarene 3036 Sherman Rd. Duncan.
