~~~~ In loving memory
On March 18th Sharon Ann Tillie died, as she lived her life, on her own terms. With gratitude for MAID, as she was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer.
Born in Edmonton on May 27th, 1946, to immigrant parents Herb and Lyn Polinski, Sharon was a lifelong learner academically and of the world and people around her. She was the first in her family to go to university and earned a BA in Recreation (UofA) and MEd (SFU). Sharon and John married in the summer of '69 and, after a few moves, landed in Duncan where they could be proper hippies; building a few houses, growing a garden, and raising their children Devon (Silas) and Johnathan (Rikst).
As an unconventional mother, she didn't care for cooking or household chores, but she was always up for a swim in the river, an animal rescue, a camping trip, a bonfire, or a long deep conversation of your choosing. She was the biggest fan of whomever she was in the company of, especially her beloved grandchildren; Ethan, Violet, and Loesje. Grand adventures happened with Gee, from fairy paths to storytelling & art. She had a keen interest in their pursuits and joined her family in many travels far and wide.
Sharon was a founding parent of Sunrise Waldorf School, opened the Red Balloon Toy Shop with two dear friends, and eventually settled into a career of over 20 years at Malaspina University College. She was always a supporter of Indigenous and 2SLGBTQ+ rights.
Sharon was a master gardener, an avid photographer, and an enthusiastic reader. Open to the mysteries of the universe and the person sitting next to her. She marched to the beat of her own drum, with little concern for what others thought of her, but lots of concern and interest in others.
Sharon is predeceased by her parents, her daughter Kira Jane, and granddaughter Sanne Mae. She also leaves her sister Carol (Gerry), brother Don (Dawn), nieces, nephews, extended family, and of course many friends, and their children, who all together created a light-filled community of love and celebration over all the years.
At Sharon's request, a private family gathering will happen at a later date. In Sharon's honour send someone you love flowers, plant a tree, grow veggies, or make a donation to Nourish Cowichan.
May the long time sun
Shine upon you,
All love surround you,
And the pure light within you
Guide your way on.
