November 24, 2022
It is with a very heavy heart that we announce the passing of Romeo Crema on Thursday November 24, 2022 at the age of 96. Pre-deceased by four brothers Bepo, Giovanni (John), Leno and Reno, he leaves behind Judy, his loving and dedicated wife of 71 years, sister Anna in Italy, son Ron Crema (Dianne), daughter Marlene Hay (Rod), grandchildren Brandon Crema (Stefanie), Jordon Shearer, Hailey Shearer (Mike), Courtney Crema, Lindsay Shearer (Jared) and great grandchildren Luca, Miley, Mila, Cruz, Hayden and Jett. In addition there were a large number of nephews, grand nephews, nieces and grand nieces in Canada, Italy and Australia.
Romeo came to Canada from Italy as a very young man shortly after the second world war where he was a member of an elite Mountain Ranger group known as Alpini. His aspirations were to re-unite with Italian/Canadian family and build a new life. Much of the money he earned was sent home to support his large family who had everything taken during the war, including their house.
After a short time in Canada, he started a masonry company which him and his brother John Crema practically turned into a house-hold name "Crema Bros Bricklaying Ltd," building numerous wood burning fireplaces and chimneys, brick and rock work for homes, schools, shopping centers and rec centers. He was extremely proud of his heritage, being inspired to be one of the founding fathers and builders of their local club (and hall) which he started in the basement of his home that was later fondly named the Italian Canadian Society.
Later, as the last remaining founder of the society, he was extremely honored to have participated in the very generous donation by the Italian Canadian Society that made the construction and start up of the West Coast General Hospital's kiosk, known as the West Coast Café. Memories of the undeniable love of his grandchildren, very hard work ethic, legacy as a skilled mason, the creation and development of a reputable family business, the building of many lasting friendships and his unending support of family are forged in our memories and hearts forever. His strength and resolve to better his and his family's lives will never be forgotten. Rest peacefully, nonno. Riposate pacificamente. Ciao. Your loving family.
