December 6, 1946 - December 3, 2019
Roland Jeroen Isidore Maria Kuitenbrouwer passed away on Dec 3, 2019 in Courtenay, B.C., surrounded by family and friends. Born a fraternal twin on December 6, 1946 in Bilthoven, the Netherlands into a family of artists and writers, he left home at 17 to work on a merchant ship throughout Southeast Asia. Roland's childhood was a source of a lifetime of stories.
Roland immigrated from the Netherlands to Canada with his young family in 1968 and was a cabinet maker and construction worker in various locations throughout southern British Columbia before settling in the Comox Valley in the mid-1970's. He combined his training in Europe as a cabinet maker and experience as a merchant marine with his love of adventure and spent the rest of his professional life on the ocean. He had nerves of steel, an adventurer's recklessness, and the ability to make or fix almost anything.
He is survived by his loving partner of 37 years, Kristin Gislason, his step-children Maya & Soren, his children Wes (Janine) & Winnie, grandchildren Caleb, Violet, Sonya & Arwyn, his brothers Steven & Damiaan, his sister Aditya, and their extended families, as well as many friends.
His family would like to thank the staff at Glacier View Lodge for his care in the last year of his life.
A Celebration of Life will be held on December 21, from 1-3 pm at the Comox Valley Funeral Home, 1101 Ryan Road, Courtenay, B.C.
