March 21, 1948 - August 10, 2022
It is with great sadness that we announce that Robert Howell Burden passed away peacefully on August 10, 2022.
He is survived by his beautiful wife Joan (nee Picard), his sons, Neil and Colin, sister Jennifer Thompson (nee Burden) and his brother Michael.
Robert was born March 21st, 1948, in Islington, Upper Holloway, London. The son of John and Hilda Burden (nee Goosman). They returned to their home in Durban, South Africa where Robert attended School. At the age of 12 he immigrated to Canada with his mother, brother, and sister by steam ship. As a youth he was drawn to the emerging Vancouver hippy scene of the late sixties. He played guitar and was a practitioner of yoga. He worked for CP Rail as a Yardsman and was the caretaker for the Rock Bay Hospital.
Robert was a dedicated husband & father and worked hard to support his family. A proud Teamster, 'Bob' was well known in the Nanaimo area for his many years of service. He was generous with his time and often helped friends, family, and neighbours.
Robert was a creative and dynamic individual. He was a talented silversmith, crafting exquisitely unique jewelry over the span of 40 years. He was a journeyman carpenter and capable home handyman. He was an excellent gardener and created a garden oasis worthy of a bonsai master. In his later years he enjoyed experimenting with solar technology and flying his UAV.
Robert was all these things and so much more.
Throughout his life Robert kept his fascination with how the universe works, from the simple to the profound.
We will miss you as you embark on your next adventure, Robert.
Be at peace.
