July 23, 1927 – February 14, 2022
In Loving Memory ~
Bob Purkiss born July 23 1927, died February 14th 2022 at the age of 94. He was born and raised in New Westminster BC by Cascade and Maude Purkiss. As a young man Bob became quite efficient with both a fishing rod and a rifle. He was an excellent marksman who’s hunting buddies nicknamed him “Sureshot”.
At 17 years of age he started his electrical apprenticeship with Hume & Rumble. He went on to enjoy a successful 44 year career as a General Foreman, an Assistant Superintendent, a Superintendent and a Project Manager for Commonwealth Construction. Bob was a life long IBEW union member receiving recognition for 70 years membership back in 2018.
Specializing in Mills and Mines, his career took him to the far corners of BC, of Canada, and eventually South America. In his spare time in these far off places, Bob enjoyed exploring and fishing the rivers and oceans, and hiking the mountains and valleys.
He truly enjoyed being at one with nature.
Once retired he started volunteering at the Oyster River Salmon Enhancement Society in Black Creek BC. Bob was giving back, learning to assist, replenish and nuture salmon through their early life cycles. He was often seen on the Oyster River with one of his many beloved labrador retrievers over the years.
We shall remember Bob’s quick wit, sense of humour, personal ethics, and sense of dedication to all aspects of his life. Those closest to Bob shall also remember his terrific story telling! The enthusiastic personal anecdotes shared from his life experiences.
Bob was predeceased by his sister Ruth, and brother Albert. Bob leaves behind his wife of 68 years Betty, daughters Elizabeth and Nancy and son Robert. Also his sister Ethel Simpson and family.
No formal service is planned. In lieu of flowers a donation to the Oyster River Salmon Enhancement Society would be appreciated.
