June 4, 1938 – October 13, 2020
It is very sad to announce the passing of our Dad. He will be so dearly missed by family and friends near and far. Dad is predeceased by his parents, his sister, two brothers and two more children, James and Lisa.
He is survived by his son Mike (Bernadette), daughter Cheri (Tom), and his granddaughter Lisa and four generations of family in BC, many in Powell River.
Dick was born and raised in Powell River, BC. He worked in the forest industry for a great many years, living in Campbell River, Sydney, Port Hardy, Prince Rupert and the Lower mainland. Campbell River has been his home base for the past 17 years.
Dick got his pilot’s license in the 70s and enjoyed flying his Piper Pacer and then his Cessna 172. When young, we enjoyed beautiful BC scenery flying over these islands and around the West coast with Dad.
In the mid 80s Dad was looking into building a sailboat. He researched many designs and then in the summer of 1987 he found Pieces of Eight, a 42-foot sloop. He changed her inside layout to his liking and added a new pilot house when living in Port Hardy. Pieces of Eight was completed in Powell River in the late 90’s and then Dick sailed her down to Mexico. His first time sailing off shore. After a couple of years down in Mexico, they headed over to Hawaii and in the summer of 2002 returned to BC waters.
Prior to sailing to Mexico, Dad spent many holidays in Puerta Vallarta and then eventually Bucerias. He drove his little pick up truck down to Mexico nine years in a row after sailing the boat back. He loved to spend the winters in the heat of the sun, and we spent many vacations meeting up with him enjoying time with family and friends.
Dad enjoyed getting out in Mike’s boat in the summer. At home he liked to get the wood splitter out and fill the woodshed. A popular past time for him was grabbing a coffee and going to the Tyee Spit, he enjoyed chatting with others also enjoying the scenery. Family dinners at his kids, especially when his granddaughter Lisa was home he so looked forward to.
Visits from friends and neighbours in Storries beach while sitting on the front patio kept him entertained many a day.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the amazing health care workers who looked after Dad in his last few weeks at Campbell River hospital. He was truly grateful for the care he was receiving.
A Celebration of Life will not be happening at this time in 2020. For family and friends, a walk in the forest and time spent by the ocean will always be happening in Celebration of his life.Obituary
