January 31, 1947 - September 20, 2019
Ray passed away peacefully with his family by his side at the age of 72 in Campbell River, BC on September 20th, 2019.
Predeceased by parents Frank and Sophie and older brother Joseph, he is survived by his three children, Raymond (Lori) Kowalchuk, Matthew (Darcy) Kowalchuk, Nadine (Shane) Sekora, beloved grandchildren Caitlin, Cassidy, Justin & Sarah, and sisters Mary (George) Kostiniuk and Vicky (Frank) Brunner.
Born in Barrhead, Alberta and moved to Vancouver, BC at the age of 16 and quickly fell in love with Judy, his wife of 52 years. He worked his entire career as a longshoreman while living in North Burnaby and in later years on the Sunshine Coast in Sechelt, BC. Eventually they moved back to Burnaby to be close to their 4 young grandchildren who he dearly adored. After retirement they moved to their acreage on Quadra Island where he spent the rest of his days enjoying the peace and quiet of smalltown living. Ray had a passion for library books, being on the water, finding a deal, taking his grandkids on his Papa adventures, and scootin' around in his famous Dodge Ram Orange Crush. He had a deep sense of community and was a proud
Canadian through and through. He will be most remembered for his quirky sense of humour, his off-the-cuff jokes and stories, and his ability to make us laugh. The family would like to acknowledge the attentive care provided by the dedicated staff at North Island Hospital Campbell River & District over the last several months.
Family and friends are invited to share memories at a celebration of his life on Saturday, October 5th at 2 pm at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 154 at 1503 West Road on Quadra Island following a 12:30pm burial service at the local cemetery on Heriot Bay Road.
