December 11, 2019
Phyllis Joan McMillan (nee Pipe) passed away December 11th 2019 in her beloved Qualicum Beach, at the age of 96 years.
Phyllis' life was an example of strength, laughter in the face of adversity, and love and devotion to family and friends. She was predeceased in 1994 by her husband Eddie of over 60 years. Her daughter Gayle McMillan (Murray Ekstrom) also sadly predeceased her on December 8th 2016.
Phyllis is survived by her son Norman (Irene Ohlson), grandson Nicolas (Breanne) and granddaughter Deanna, nieces Lynda Richardson, Mary Brouilette, and Brenda Hunter (Ed Bragg), extended family members, John and Heather Fraser, cousins Albert and Pam Swabey, nephews Edward and Dan Hughes and many others who were welcomed and loved.
After settling in Qualicum Beach in 1951 Phyllis and her husband, through many volunteer activities, were cornerstones in the social development and wellbeing of this community. Phyllis was active in St Stephen's church her entire life, as well as assisting in the establishment of the QB Curling Club. She was a member of the Pythian Society, an honoree Rotarian, a local BC Cancer Society organizer, and was instrumental in the funding of Qualicum Beach Civic Centre. She was honored to be named Citizen of Year in 1993. If there was a need in the neighborhood or community, Phyllis was always at the ready to quietly lend a hand or lead the way.
Phyllis' greatest joys were associated with her family, her love and commitment to her community of Qualicum Beach and of course, her love of the ocean, where she swam into her nineties.
The McMillan family invites family and friends to join them in celebration of Phyllis, and a life well lived, on January 13th, 2 pm at St Stephen's United Church in Qualicum Beach.
