December 25, 1930 - August 19, 2019
Sadly we announce the passing of our dear husband and father. Phil leaves behind his beloved wife Elisabeth Giezek, daughters Karen Craven (Bill), Chris Logan (Mike) and Lisa Micklethwaite (Jenn Prunty) and step-daughters Penny Hill (Phil) and Petra Barnes along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and several cousins still reside in England and Australia.
Phil was born in Barnsley, Yorkshire, England. Phil chose to apprentice as a barber, at age 14, to avoid working in the coal mines. In 1964, he and his young family immigrated to Canada. The family settled in Campbell River, as a barbering job had been secured for him at Mikes Sportsman Barber Shop next to the Beehive Cafe, in what was then known as the Laver Building. Phil spent the rest of his working life at that shop. Mike Turner and Phil were not only co-workers, but also the best of friends.
Phil married Elisabeth in 1991, and over the years they spent much time in Mexico, and enjoyed jaunts to Reno, Las Vegas and the Silver Reef. Christmas Dinners were always a good time, as he was able to celebrate both Christmas and his birthday with all his family around him!
Phil was a very quiet man. He rarely raised his voice and never spoke an unkind word about anyone. He was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, and for many years, was a member of its Colour Party, taking part in many presentations and competitions around the province. He loved organizing and playing in the weekly crib tournaments, cooking for Fish and Chip nights and partaking in the Remembrance Day ceremonies. Phil was also a very proud member of AA, regularly attending meetings for over 43 years. He enjoyed attending the AA rallies and helped countless newcomers into their first steps of recovery.
The family would like to extend our thanks to all of the doctors, nurses and staff at CRGH for care provided to Phil.
A memorial service for Phil will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, September 7, at the Lutheran Church, 201 Birch St, Campbell River, with a reception to follow at the Legion Hall.
