May 9, 2019
Peggy Cordelia Mitchell was gathered into the arms of the Lord this day, May 9, 2019.
Peggy had an indomitable spirit, fighting to the end to retain her independence, despite painful mobility challenges and failing health as she aged. Predeceased by her husband Alexander (Sandy) Mitchell, her oldest son Peter in his childhood and her youngest son Stephen at age 23.
She married Sandy in England during WW2 and immigrated to Canada at the war's end, accompanying him through his extensive career in the Army (RCR) which took them to many postings across Canada and back to Europe before his final posting in Vancouver. Peggy was a talented seamstress, sewing exquisite ball gowns for formal Mess dinners and later provided beautiful clothes for Christy during her teenage years.
In the late 1980's Peggy moved to Ocean Park near White Rock. When she moved to Berwick in Comox at age 95, she found it very difficult to leave "her little house" that she loved for over 25 years. She spent her last few months at Eagle Park in Qualicum Beach. The family gives warm thanks to all the staff who helped her in both residences and also many thanks to Dr. Dustin Falk, who looked after her with great attention and kindness while she was in his care.
Peggy was an excellent cook who welcomed many of her children's friends for Sunday dinners well into their adult years. She courageously went to work at age 50, in order to gain some financial independence and to provide extras for her children. At age 97, Peggy outlived her sisters Hilda & Katherine and most of her friends.
She was widowed before age 60 yet undertook this life challenge with positive action. She learned how to play Bridge & Mahjong so she would gain new friends and she learned how to swim, simply because she had, "never learned properly!" She also traveled extensively; yet her favourite trip was always back to Brighton, England, where she was born and raised. She is survived by her loving daughter Christine (Roger) her beloved granddaughters Elysia (Elliott) and Lauren and her treasured great-granddaughter EllaRaye.
When we celebrated Peggy's 97th birthday last July, she said, "This is lovely, but I don't want to see 98." She said that it was time to go to 'the great Martini Bar in the sky.' We hope that the bartender will make it for her just the way she likes it, with a lemon wedge and 2 ice cubes.
