August 30, 1954 - August 23, 2020
Paula left us peacefully at home on the afternoon of Sunday, August 23rd with her loving family at her side. She leaves to forever miss her, her husband, Frank Syrotuck; children, Nick and Annie; sisters, Jane, Sarah, Diana, and Elizabeth; nephews, Matthew and Aidan; nieces, Rachel, Nadine, and Jesse. Also left to miss her are George (Diana) Syrotuck and their children, Erika, Nigel, and Jason. Paula was predeceased by her parents Mary and Reg Young.
Born in Buckinghamshire, England, Paula came to Canada in 1957 with her family. They lived in Toronto and eventually made their way across Canada to Vancouver, then on to Powell River, finally settling in Nanaimo in 1960.
Paula and Frank were married in 1978 after knowing each other for several years. In 1980, they purchased a small cabin on the beach in Nanoose Bay and extensively remodeled and expanded the house before starting their family - Nick in 1987 and Annie in 1990. The family still owns this house today.
Paula was devoted to her family. She was busy with the kids activities; Nick with his Motocross racing and Annie's competitive equestrian events especially. The family spent many wonderful summers on their beach and had a memorable vacation in Hawaii. In more recent years, Paula and Frank spent their holidays in Osoyoos.
After completing the Cartography Course at Camosun College in 1977, Paula began her career with the Ministry of Mines in Victoria. She later took a position as Design Technician with the Ministry of Highways in 1979 in Nanaimo where she worked until her retirement in 2002.
Paula was an avid gardener and was involved in the Nanoose Place Landscaping Project for many years. Later in life, she began upholstering and worked on many challenging projects.
The support and compassion from family and friends greatly eased the difficulties of the last two years and will always be appreciated.
Paula was a kind and sensible person that kept the entire family together throughout the years. She will always be missed.
Due to Covid 19, there will be no Celebration of Life for Paula. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honour her memory may do so by making a donation in her name to the Vancouver Island Cancer Lodge.
