Paul Alexander “Lex” Rutherford

Lex passed away peacefully in his beloved Africa, shortly after his 94th birthday.

Born in Lashburn, Saskatchewan, he cherished his work with farmers in Saskatchewan, Ontario and Kenya. Beloved father of daughters Tricia (Hiley) and family of Australia, Glenna (Noad) and family and son Randy and family. He will be fondly remembered by family and friends in Canada and Kenya. Beloved husband of Alda (Sproule) for 49 years, who was the love of his life until her death in December 1999.

In his late 70s Lex began helping Kenyans find water and dig wells, and started an organization called S.W.I.M. (Shallow Well International Movement).

His passion helped many families without water to have a well of their own, providing sustenance in drought and famine areas. Many of the people he helped over his years in Africa attended a memorial in Nairobi and spoke of his compassion and how he touched their lives.

Lex lived life joyfully and in service to others. He was also a wonderful father who made a lot of fun for his family.

A celebration of Lex’s life will be held at the Seniors’ Center in Neilburg, Saskatchewan at 12:00 pm on Saturday, September 15 2018.
