Oliver, a long time resident of Cumberland, passed away peacefully at Glacier View Lodge on Thursday, December 30, 2021 at the age of 92, with family by his side.
Oliver was the second youngest of 12, born in Reston, Manitoba. He moved west in the early 1950's and soon after met his wife Margaret Harvie, who passed away in February 1996. They had two children, Derek (Lisa) and Darlene (Ken). He also leaves behind five grandchildren (Michael, Merri, Alexis, Sophie, and Erica), seven great grandchildren, and special friend Rene.
Initially coming to the Comox Valley to work on the Air Base as a carpenter, he later went on to work as a self employed craftsmen until retirement. Oliver had a great love for hockey and began playing for the Courtenay Glaciers in the late 50's. From 1965, through the early 80's, he both played for and managed the Courtenay Mustangs - competing in two CAHA World Championships. Oliver also dedicated many hours to coaching minor hockey. After winning the Gold Medal at the BC Summer Games in 1985, Oliver founded the Comox Valley Horseshoe Club. He competed at 3 world championships (North Dakota 2002, Red Deer 2002, Idaho 2004), and continued playing and organizing horseshoes until 2017.
The family would like to extend their thanks to the staff at Glacier View Lodge for their care of Oliver during his time there.
