July 7, 1951 - December 30, 2021
It is with profound sadness that we mourn the sudden passing of our brother, Murray John Matthews on December 30, 2021. Murray was born in Nanaimo on July 7, 1951.
Murray was predeceased by his Father, Murray George Matthews in 1966 and by his Mother, Margaret Louise Matthews in 2017. Murray is survived by his three siblings; Judy Jordan (nee Matthews), Michael Matthews and Daniel Matthews. Murray is also survived by nieces and nephews. Judy (Ryan, Sara, Max), Danny and Michele (Alexa and Kristina).
In the early years, Murray spent time in Granite Bay with his mother, father and sister Judy. Murray senior was a logger in the area. After Granite Bay, they moved back to Nanaimo where Murray's brothers, Michael and Danny were born. Growing up in Nanaimo, Murray loved horses and took great pride in caring for and riding his horse, Shadow. Murray was an avid Motorcycle buff and the owner of many fast and sleek cars. He loved his family and enjoyed many great friendships through the years. Camping, family BBQ's, game night and dancing were some of the activities Murray enjoyed with his family. He was a great student and in high school he won the "McLean's Certificate of Writing" for his top quality penmanship.
Murray lived with the challenges of being diagnosed with Schizophrenia in his mid to late twenties. Although he lived in care facilities from that time on, we all still managed to get together to laugh, talk and remember the good times. There was always glimpses of the Murray we knew even up until the end. His sense of humor was witty and quick. When he smiled the room lit up with a glint in his eyes like he knew something we didn't; maybe he did.
Murray's life was not easy nor was it one we wanted for him, but he took it all in stride with great dignity and always tried to see the good in each day; a task made more difficult given his circumstances. He had a strength and stamina that would have felled others.
We want to thank Cowichan Lodge and of late, Wexford Creek Care Facility. Your kindness, care and love for our brother brightened his days and warmed our hearts. You looked after him as if he were your own. For that we are truly thankful.
We will forever love and miss you Moo!! I bet you are somewhere smiling right now. Love Judy, Michael and Danny.
In Lieu of flowers, a donation to the Schizophrenia Society can be made.

A Poem for Murray
It's hard to believe that you are gone
Our love for you will be our bond
Forever and for always you'll be in our hearts
For you have undoubtedly left your mark
For all you suffered and endured
Throughout your life we never heard you say
You wanted things to be a different way
You accepted your fate and tried your best
And now my brother, you get to rest
Rest in Peace Murray. We love you!!
