In Loving Memory ~
Five foot two with eyes of blue an iron will and humour too. Mom died in the early morning hours of May 9th after spending her last Mother's Day with her children.
Our Mom was born in Dingwall then raised in Tain Scotland the second of three children of Robert and Winnifred Hay. At the start of World War II Morna and her older sister Jean and younger brother Jimmy were sent to Hamilton Ontario on a ship
filled with British war children.
The Hay children were cared for by her Aunt Doris and Uncle Blair Wallace along with their 3 boys. At the end of the war Mom and her siblings returned to Tain but she missed life in Canada.
Mom returned to Hamilton in 1955 where she met the love of her life Ian MacDonald. They married on November 30, 1956 and drove to Vancouver in a new vehicle. Five children arrived over the next 8 years. Mom was the "rock" at our home on Cosgrove Crescent while Dad supported the family by working long hours as a small business owner. They didn't get another new car for a long time.
Mom loved playing and watching sports. She attended all her children's hockey, soccer, baseball games, figure skating and summer swim meets. She drove a large red and white International truck with a standard transmission. It was often jammed full of Cilaire school kids on their way to Nanaimo's Civic arena or other spots.
After we were all in school Mom started working at BCAA and went on to become the top producing travel agent in the organization for many years. She loved her job and the trips that came with it. She travelled all over the world. Mom was a proud Canadian but stayed close with her family in Scotland and Tain was her home town.
Mom was very proud and somewhat surprised that all 5 of us graduated from UBC. She was a very supportive mother but was not shy in offering tough advice if she thought we were not making a good choice. Mom and Dad were a great parent team all their married life. Family always came first.
In retirement Mom and Dad became loving grandparents always ready to help and encourage. The grandchildren enjoyed visits to their condo at the Beacon where she kept a large supply of Koala Springs. Dad died in 2014 and Mom was never quite the same. The last 5 years Mom suffered with Alzheimer's.
She was always concerned that her children and grandchildren were OK and "home and safe". Although we are saddened by her passing we are glad she no longer has to worry and is in a better place. She was a wonderful Mom.
The family is extremely grateful for the compassionate care she received by many healthcare workers at the Kensington and Summit facilities in Victoria.
Mom is survived by Ian (Nancy), Rob (Cindy), Linda (Rick), Duncan (Bilge), Heather (Gord), 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren, Sister-in-law and Maid of Honour Greta Morton, Sister-in-law Catherine Hay, and nieces and nephews in Scotland and Canada.
