June 14, 1933 - February 1, 2023
In loving memory ~
We are saddened to share that Mickie passed away on Wednesday, February 1st, 2023 at Eden Gardens in Nanaimo. In her 90th year, she will be sadly missed by: her children, Laure (John) Reinhard, Michael LeClair, and Audrey (Steve) Ellis; her grandchildren, John and Geoff Reinhard, Genny LeClair, Ashley (Jonathon) Johnston, and Katie Ellis (Scott); great-grandchildren, Sydney & Graden Reinhard, Bayne & Bauer Reinhard, and Ellis & Ada Johnston; brothers Erle (Lana) Switzer and Wayne Switzer as well as many nieces and nephews.
Born June 14th, 1933, in Ottawa, Ontario, to a family of 10, Morna joined the RCAF in 1951. It was while serving that she acquired the nickname "Mickie" and met, and married, our dad Rocky LeClair. Together they served on many bases across Canada and in Europe, before being transferred to, and retiring, here in Nanaimo.
As a young mother Mickie threw herself into life on various military bases, was an avid curler and homemaker, and the ultimate hostess. As her family grew up she entered the workforce with all the enthusiasm and commitment with which she approached everything, starting off in the first computerized payroll department in Nanaimo with A&B Construction, and continuing with several other well-established local companies, including Mid-Island Co-op until it's closure and her retirement.
Retirement brought more travel as Mickie & Rocky loved to cruise, she was invited to join (& spent 3 decades in) Beta Sigma Phi women's group, worked on her passion for quilting, and unlimited hours with family and grandchildren. Sunday dinner at Nana & Papa's was not to be missed and we all remember her baking and Saturday night pizza making! In these past years of decline, we know Mom missed family dinners and celebrations most of all.
Mom had family with her when she passed at Eden Gardens, succumbing to the ravishes of dementia, and will be forever grateful for the kind and caring staff there who worked daily to enhance her quality of life, treating her with dignity, respect and compassion, and for others who touched her life recently. We intend to hold a celebration of life when the weather turns warmer and will share details at that time.
She will be missed but we know she is now with Rocky and they are once again "Mickie and Rocky."
*donations in Mickie's name would be gratefully accepted at Eden Gardens, a not for profit dementia care facility*
A date for a celebration of life will be announced later.
