September 27, 1944 – December 5, 2020
On Saturday, December 5th, 2020 at the age of 76, Mike passed away peacefully with his wife Penny and son Steve by his side, at NRGH Palliative Care Unit.
Mike was born in Port Arthur, ONT and moved to Ladysmith, BC, in 1950.
While living in Ladysmith he attended elementary and high school, and afterwards received his plumbing ticket, followed by his saw filing ticket. He spent many years as a volunteer firefighter for the Ladysmith Fire Department. He met his wife Penny in 1970, and they were married in 1972.
Mike loved playing, watching, and coaching sports. He played many sports including boxing, hockey, baseball, football and lacrosse. He was well known locally for his boxing skills and one of his proudest achievements was winning the Golden Gloves. He also loved dancing, and won many Jive dance competitions. Another highlight from his sports career was playing baseball in San Jose, California. In his teenage years, he was very determined to play sports, which was evident in his willingness to hitchhike from Ladysmith to Nanaimo to play football for the Nanaimo Redmen.
He was active in the Nanaimo youth sports community, coaching Steve, and many others with Nanaimo Minor Hockey and Nanaimo Minor Baseball for over 7 years.
Mike’s hobbies included gardening (especially his tomatoes), cooking, music, singing and playing his guitars.
Mike worked at Harmac (MacMillan Bloedel) in the sawmill for 33 years, starting as an Edgerman and later as a Saw Filer in #3 Woodroom (later named Island Phoenix Division). Early in his Harmac career he was also a member of the Harmac Fire Department. He retired in 1999 at 55 years of age.
Mike is survived by his loving wife (and “nurse”) of 48 years Penny, his children, Dale (Wife Robin, Ryan, and McKenzie), Kendre (Alicia, Chelsea and Brooklynne), Sandra (Emily and Mathew), Steve (Wife Deanna, Jade and Karis).
