November 29, 1943 - July 31, 2021
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Douglas Miller on July 31st, 2021. Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, he is survived by his wife of forty-eight years, Stella Miller, his sons Nick (Tara) and Stuart (Collette), and his three grandsons.
Mike was born in Victoria, BC, in 1943. He attended Mount Douglas Secondary School, the Vancouver Arts College, the University of Victoria, and completed his Master of Arts: Education at the University of British Columbia.
Mike worked at the Museum of British Columbia, the Manitoba Museum of Man and Nature, and the Alaska State Museum before finding his true passion in teaching. Mike was a natural born educator who worked in School District 69 for thirty years.
Throughout his life, Mike shared his love of learning through ongoing participation and volunteer leadership in many community groups on Vancouver Island.
He was well known for his love of plants and gardening. He was a founding member of the Central Vancouver Island Orchid Society, a member of the Qualicum Garden Club, and a member of the Alpine Gardeners of Central Vancouver Island and he volunteered at Milner Gardens working with the propagation group.
He was also an avid birder who participated in bird counts up and down Vancouver Island and he volunteered as a judge and coach for the Parksville Qualicum Fish and Game Archery program.
In lieu of a Celebration of Life, the family encourages everyone to celebrate Mike in their own special way. They are grateful to those who continue his legacy of learning, sharing, and volunteering.
