Dearly loved husband, partner and friend of Pamela during 59 glorious years of marriage, devoted father to two precious daughters, Lorraine (Richard) and Susanne (David) and loving grandad to Geoffrey and Claire, Michael Day left this mortal life on September 9th, 2022 and he will live on in our hearts and memories forever.
Born in Leeds, England, Michael led a long and fulfilling career as a research scientist with the National Research Council (NRC) in Ottawa. During his 37 years, he worked on many exciting and cutting-edge research topics. Highlights include research about gas kinetics, polymer photochemistry, the flammability of textiles (firefighter clothing and children's sleepware), polymer composites on the Canada Space Arm and solid waste plastic recycling. He was honoured to be Canada's representative at International Standards Organization (ISO) meetings and to reach the position of Principle Research Officer at the NRC. In his last 10 years, he led a team of researchers in highly innovative applications including medical tissue engineering, solar cells and PEM fuel cells.
Michael was an energetic man. In his spare time, he could be found camping, hiking, canoeing and exploring many of Ontario's Provincial Parks with his family and skiing in the Gatineau Hills with his friends and daughters. At home, he enjoyed tending his large backyard vegetable patch.
Upon his retirement in 2006, Michael retired to Sooke on Vancouver Island where his interest and dedication to Science continued as a scientific volunteer with the BC "Scientist and Innovators in the Schools" (SIS) program which promotes student's interest in science, math and computing. He spent many happy hours hiking the Sooke hills, manning the longboats, volunteering with the Sooke Fine Arts Show and Sooke Philharmonic Society, and delivering Meals on Wheels.
The family would like to thank all the health care professionals at Victoria General Hospital, Saanich Pennisula Hospital, and Pennisula Heath Care Unit Palliative Care Team, whose care and compassion gave Michael and his family much comfort in his final days.
He lived a long, full life and he will be missed by many. May he rest in peace.
The funeral service will be held at Sand's Funeral Chapel - Colwood (317 Goldstream Ave) on Thursday, September 15th at 11am. Masks are required.
If you would like to make a memorial donation, the family suggest donations be made to the Saanich Penisula Hospital Foundation or Victoria Foundation.
