October 3, 1937 - October 7, 2020
At home, in the earliest hour of October 7, Mel quietly slipped away while in the loving arms of his adored wife Mary and in the presence of their children Jennifer and Daniel, and daughter-in-law Marie Ann.
Born in Chilliwack, BC, Mel was predeceased by his parents Wilfred and Irene Clark, and his only sibling Allan. Mel moved to Powell River as a teenager and met his future wife Mary in high school. They married in 1958 and Mel graduated with a degree in Pharmacy from UBC in 1959.
Mel started his pharmacy career in 1959 at Woodward's Department Store in Vancouver and transferred to the Woodward's store in Port Alberni in 1960. Then in 1962 he moved to Campbell River with Mary and baby Daniel as there was an opportunity for him to open his own drugstore in the brand new Tyee Plaza. He owned and operated this store for over 40 years.
Initially his store was known as Clark's Tyee Pharmacy, then Western Drug Mart, followed by Pharmasave. Mel was a founding member of the Pharmasave group and was a key player during its expansion across Canada.
Mel liked spending time outdoors and enjoyed all that the Campbell River area had to offer; his favourite activities ranged from canoeing and cycling to foraging for berries and wild mushrooms. He also enjoyed travelling with Mary and experiencing the history, culture and attractions of the countries they visited.
Mel's family would like to offer their sincere thanks to the Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA) and to the nurses, doctors and support staff their heartfelt care. The family would also like to thank the pharmacists who provided assistance and guidance while caring for "one of their own".
The family and numerous relatives and friends will cherish Mel's life and will continue to celebrate him and his lifetime achievements.
