July 27, 1940 - March 3, 2021
It is with profound sadness that the family of Mathew (Matt) Mullen of Campbell River, BC announces his peaceful passing on March 3, 2021 surrounded by his devoted family.
The youngest of seven sons, Matt was born on July 27, 1940 in Delvin, Ireland to parents, William (Bill) and Greta Mullen. Matt was predeceased by his parents and brothers John, Martin, and Jim Mullen.
Left to mourn his passing are his beloved wife, Margaret, daughters Jacqueline and Marie (Mike Scott) and son Andrew (Sophie), grandchildren, Claire and Kevin Allgaier and Madeleine and Tess Mullen, great-grandson Tré Allgaier, brothers, Vincent, Dan and Tim as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and family friends.
Matt met and married Margaret (née Gibney) in Coventry, England in September 1962. In 1964, together with baby daughter Jacqueline, they emigrated to Canada settling first in Uranium City, Saskatchewan. A proud native of Ireland, Matt embraced the opportunities and lifestyle offered by his new homeland, his fishing and horseshoe playing skills transferring easily to his new surroundings.
With the start up of the Great Canadian Oilsands Company (Suncor) in Fort McMurray in early 1967, Matt moved there with his young family which now included son Andrew just 10 days old. Daughter, Marie arrived in May of the following year. Matt pursued a successful career in the oilsands industry while raising his children in the rapidly growing city of Fort McMurray.
Matt's love of family and new homeland inspired many other family members to immigrate and form tight-knit family connections in Canada. Family and celebrating the culture and traditions of both his native land and new homeland were paramount throughout Matt's life. Matt's stories of his escapades growing up with six brothers in rural Ireland are legend, and are treasured memories passed on to new generations of the family.
In 1983, Matt and family moved to Kamloops, BC. Life was full of family gatherings, celebrations, graduations, weddings, travel, fly tying and fly fishing. 2004 saw Matt and Margaret relocate to beautiful Campbell River, BC where they have enjoyed the benefits of West Coast Living.
Friends and family will remember Matt for his sparkling blue eyes, infectious grin, sharp wit and sense of humour, kindness, generosity and empathy, but above all his charm. His forté was his ability to talk to anybody about anything and make friends wherever he went - perhaps a trait that can be traced to his Irish heritage!
Matt's family extend grateful thanks to the magnificent staff at Yucalta Lodge and Dr. Wiann Bedeker for their kindness and exceptionally compassionate care during the progression of his Parkinson's Disease. Grateful thanks also to Fr. Jan Grotkowski SDS for the offering of prayers and Sacraments to bring Matt comfort.
Details of Church Services and Celebration of Life will be confirmed shortly.
