It is with great sadness that we say farewell to Mary Bridgette “Bridie” McNeill who passed away at the age of 92 on December 24, 2017 in the Cowichan District Hospital.
She was born on August 28, 1925 in Portglenone, Northern Ireland. Bridie and her husband Andy (d.1986) moved from Northern Ireland to the Cowichan Valley in the late 50’s. They first stayed with their friends , Sam and Bertha Hanna in Honeymoon Bay and then settling in Duncan.
Many will remember Bridies Restaurant which she owned and operated from 1977 – 1992 and her famous curry chicken. Her loving and beautiful personality turned staff and customers into family, and people came to see Bridie and have a laugh and to enjoy her delicious home cooking. Bridie enjoyed nothing more than a good story or joke and would laugh and laugh until the tears were running down her face.
Bridie will be missed and fondly remembered by her son Brian (Thomas Ellis) and daughter Kathleen Branting (son-in-law Randy, grandchildren, Joran and Danielle), nephew David McNeill (Catherine, Danna and Jean), nephews Declan and Dominic and their families in Northern Ireland.
Thank you to ambulance crew and North Cowichan Fire Dept. who came out in the snow to help get her down our driveway! Nurses and especially Dr. Malherbe who was always there for mom.
Please no flowers just have a wee drink and cheer mom and a donation to our local SPCA (as we all know how mom loved her cats!). Service will be held at a later date.
We will all miss you mom.
