Mary Bernice Mercer

June 23, 1932 – May 16, 2020
Bernice passed away peacefully, aged 87, at the Cowichan District Hospital with her family around her.
Bernice was born to Del and Blanche Storie in Lanark, Ontario where she grew up with two sisters until joining the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1950. She was posted to various training facilities until becoming a Fighter Control Officer. While stationed in Goderich, Ontario she met and married former husband, Fred Mercer (predeceased) who was also in the RCAF. They had two sons John and Peter (predeceased). The young family moved around Ontario military bases until settling in Greenfield, Nova Scotia. In 1971 the family moved west to Duncan, British Columbia.
Bernice was her boys’ number one fan and could be found at hockey rinks, football fields, baseball diamonds and gyms cheering them on. Sons’ friends were always welcome in her home and she quickly became “mom” to all. In 1975 Bernice moved to Montreal, where she turned into a rabid Expos fan, later relocating to her hometown and eventually returning to Duncan to be closer to her son and family. Bernice kept herself busy volunteering for many organizations including St. Peter’s Anglican Church, St. John’s Church exercise group and the Cowichan Lodge. She loved being part of her church family at St. Peters, singing in the choir and volunteering for Messy Church.
Bernice is survived by son John (Alison); granddaughters Rebecca and Makayla; great grandchildren Marlee, Blake and Easton; sisters Della and Lynda (Don); nieces Wenda (Manuel) and Caryn (Dale); and nephews Jason (Nicole) and David (Debbie) as well as many great nieces and nephews. Bernice was a wonderful mom, not only to her sons but to many who called her “mom” and a great friend.
A heart felt thank you to Dr. Bryan Bass, for his patience and kindness; the staff at Cowichan District Hospital, who treated her with dignity and respect; the ambulance paramedics; and Reverend MJ Leewis-Kirk who treated her with kindness, friendship and Grace. A special thank you to Dr Jansz and Becky in CDH ICU and to Nicole Smith.
In compliance with current restrictions a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations may be made to St. Peters Anglican Church, Duncan, BC.
