July 13, 1917 - May 9, 2019
The youngest of six siblings, mom was born on a Friday the 13th in the midst of an Alberta prairie summer thunderstorm. Her father ensured her dramatic entrance would forever be part of her life story when he named her Jovina, after Jove, the Roman God of Thunder.
Born at the end of WWI, mom lived through the Great Depression and WWII. As a child, she lived and worked on the family farm and often rode a horse to school. Like many of her generation, she was frugal, self-dependent, and always ready to lend a hand to a neighbour.
During the War, she worked at Boeing's Sea Island plant in Vancouver where she drilled holes and placed rivets in military aircraft wings. Her many skills included household repairs, carpentry, and sewing clothes for the family. She enjoyed people, and for many years worked as one of the "Rexall Girls" at Woodland's Pharmacy in downtown Courtenay. Woodland's was an old-fashioned, family-oriented business, and its owners and staff formed life-long friendships. In her later years, mom spent her time visiting with her many friends, and maintaining the property she loved on the banks of Morrison Creek. Doing her "chores," she maintained, kept her active and fit well into her late 90s.
Predeceased by her husband, William David "Bill" Little (1920 - 1993), Marjorie is survived by her three sons: Richard (Wanda), Ted (Hitu), and John; grandchildren, David (Cheryl) and Matthew (Crystal), and great-grandchildren Bruce, Savannah, Loe, Noah, Coral, and Lochlan.
Mom's final days were spent in the house she loved, surrounded by family and friends. We would like to extend special thanks to the Vancouver Island Health Authoritys Community Care Team for making it possible for us to keep mom at home, and to our relatives and the close friends who kept mom's final days and hours full of love and light: Gordon and Ann, Cherri, Vicki, Judy and Ed, Ellen, Carol, Elizabeth, Phil, Lynn, and Lisa.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
