January 17, 1927 - November 5, 2019
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Marie van Toor on Tuesday, November 5, 2019. Marie was born in the former Dutch East Indies on January 17, 1927.
Here she met and married her husband Theo van Toor in 1949. Marie and her family subsequently moved to the Netherlands and later to Cedar, BC where they joined their daughter Marianne. Marie, predeceased by her husband Theo and daughter Marianne, is survived by her stepson Theo, his children Ian, Fedor and Jorinde and great-grandchildren Isabelle and James, grandson Jesse Vandergoes, her great-grandchildren Lily and Karma, son-in-law John Lund in British Columbia, her sister Lena in Holland, her brother Walter in Toronto and her large extended family in Holland and Canada.
Marie was very energetic, enthusiastic and enjoyed many interests including: gardening, music, dancing, cooking, walking/hiking and other physical fitness activities. She completed the Great Walk from Gold River to Port Hardy in 1999 and 2000 and won a trophy for being the oldest person to complete the walk at the age of 73. She remained active with a large circle of friends and traveled extensively until her deteriorating health slowed her down.
Marie's family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Dufferin Place Residential care facility for the kind treatment they gave Marie during her last years. In lieu of flowers, a donation made in Marie van Toor's name to the Nanaimo Ladysmith Schools Foundation would be appreciated. Marie's family will have a private service.
