Marie-Louise Hesser

November 6, 1951 – May 10, 2022
It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of Marie, loving Wife, Mother and Grandmother at the age of 70. She is survived by her husband of 51 years Rolf, her two sons (Kai and Roy), and grandchildren (Markus and Lincoln).
Marie was born and raised an only child in Berlin to Butcher Shop owners Herman and Christine Wunderlich. It was in Berlin that she would eventually meet her future husband, Rolf, whom she would marry just a few years later in 1971. That same year, they immigrated to Canada to start their new life together, crossing the Atlantic by passengership, with a small Volkswagen that would take them faithfully across Canada from Montreal to Vancouver Island.
The adventure would begin in Black Creek, in a house with no indoor plumbing, no heat, and a rifle for protection against bears when using the outdoor toilet. It would not be long before they would move to Nanaimo and establish the Columbia Bakery in 1972. Marie could always be found on her perch in the coffee shop, where she enjoyed overseeing the staff, and talking to customers.
A celebration of life will be held on 29 May 2022, at the German Hall from 1-5pm.
In lieu of flowers, donation can be made to the BC Cancer Foundation or the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation.
