Marian Innes

March 27, 1925 – April 26, 2021
Marian Innes (nee Griggs) died peacefully on April 26, 2021 in the Cumberland Lodge Long-term Care facility.
Mom had just turned 96 on March 27 and her birthday was celebrated by the family with a window visit. Fortunately, the family were able to visit in person the last few weeks of her life.
Mom was predeceased by her husband Douglas (2000) and son Doug. junior (1982). Left to mourn are sister Kathleen, sons David (Luise) and Richard, daughter Margaret (Terry) and grandchildren Rachel (Ryan), Matthew (Lisa), Jill (Dewayne), Stefan (Marilyse) and Peter (Celena).
Grandma Marian will be sadly missed by her great grandchildren (Ana, Abby, Katie, Hailey, Kelly, Laura, Liam and Charlotte).
Mom was born in Middlesbrough, England and was evacuated to Saskatchewan as a teenager during WWII. She enjoyed living with her host family (Gosling) and remained life-long friends with their older daughter, Evelyn.
She went back to England after the war to complete training as a registered nurse. She returned to Canada in 1948 to marry her high-school sweetheart Doug. As a nurse, Mom worked at several hospitals in BC and was actively involved in Planned Parenthood.
Mom and Dad were outdoor enthusiasts with many camping, fishing and wildlife viewing trips throughout BC. Mom loved being out in the camper and was always ready for the next adventure. The couple continued to explore the outdoors after retiring to Courtenay.
Mom, along with Dad, were active members of the Comox Valley Naturalists Society taking part in many bird counts and potluck dinners. Mom was a very kind, outgoing and social person.
She was always interested in reading non-fiction and learning new things. She was an avid fan of CBC radio (current events, books and opera) and the Knowledge Network. Mom loved to travel and after Doug’s death she took several cruises (the Baltic Sea, Caribbean, Hawaii) with close friends. Mom definitely loved life to the fullest.
The family thanks Dr. J. Reggler, nursing and support staff at the North Island Hospital Comox Valley, and the Cumberland Lodge Long-term Care facility for excellent care. Any donations in her memory can be made to Comox Valley Nature ( or YANA (You Are Not Alone:
A celebration of Mom’s life is being planned.
