February 2, 2020
It is with sadness that the family of Margaret Anne McKenzie announce her peaceful passing on February 2, 2020 after a long battle with cancer.
She is survived by her loving husband of over 47 years, George Alexander McKenzie, and by 'her girls': Cheryl Anne McKenzie Wilson (spouse Jason Wilson), Linda Christine Petkova (spouse Kiril Petkov) and Diana Kathryn McKenzie (spouse Chris Lay). She will be fondly remembered by her grandchildren Vanessa, Emma, Alex, Anna, Colin and Norah. Sadly she is predeceased by her grandson Jeremy, younger brothers Rand and John Hartley, as well as her parents Florence and Donald Hartley. Surviving Hartley brothers Lorne, Jimmy, Charlie, Peter, David, Bruce and Jerry also remember their loving sister.
Margaret has lived the Comox Valley since 1989, when a military posting brought the family out west. She has had a long career in Dietetics, with many years service at both St. Joseph's Hospital and Glacier View Lodge. She retired in 2013 and has been a vibrant and involved member of her local community. She has been a devout member of the congregation of Christ the King Catholic Church, going on pilgrimage and finding much comfort from her faith and her friends there. She was also active as a member of the local soup kitchen, helping to co-ordinate and serve meals weekly for many years.
Being a member of a book club as well as a cancer survivor's dragon boat team, and nurturing many friendships from her working days as well as those with close neighbours has brought richness to her life and treasured support for her over the years and especially in the past few years as she struggled bravely with lymphoma. She made the most of every day, with a positivity, energy and selflessness that have been inspirational. It has been a blessing to her and her family that her final difficult struggle was short and supported by excellent home palliative care.
A catholic funeral service is planned for February 8, 2020 at Christ the King Church, to be followed immediately by a church reception. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made in her memory to the Canadian Celiac Foundation at: https://www.celiac.ca/donate-today/ or to the BC Cancer Foundation at https://bccancerfoundation.com/ways-donate/giftmemory
