Lorne Donald Ball

December 5, 2019

November 21, 1931 - December 5, 2019
Lorne passed away peacefully after a brief hospital stay following a stroke. Left to mourn are his beloved family - Anne (nee Paul) his wife for sixty good years, daughter Alex (Scott), sons - Ken (Susan), Geoff (Candice), Derek (Mhairi) and brother Allen (Marjorie). Missing their Grampa are Kara, Max, Lilly, Jordyn, Duncan, Sophia, Isabella and Kahlila.
Lorne was born in Nelson, B.C. and lived his school years in Port Alberni. His childhood and teen years were spent with lifelong friends, Gord Devereaux and Bob Galloway, exploring and adventuring on the hillsides and waters around the town, often on less-than-safe water crafts, usually with a dog on board.
The Ball family moved to Victoria and Lorne began his post-secondary education at Victoria College, then U.B.C. and received his PhD. at U.ofA. in Edmonton. His career in chemistry alternated between education and industry/research. He worked at Selkirk College, East Kootenay College, Crown Zellerbach, Dow Chemical, Syncrude and Teck/Cominco. He always enjoyed helping new chemists as they began their careers. Moves required by his work gave Lorne reason to develop several lovely gardens and plant many trees. He always followed his own advice - "dig a hundred dollar hole to plant a ten dollar tree".
Lorne was a member of St. Columba Presbyterian Church and his beliefs gave him support and encouragement through difficult times Later this spring when the weather is warmer and leaves are on the trees, there will be an informal celebration of Lorne's life. He will be missed by family and friends.
