In loving memory ~
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Leonard Q. Fong after a short battle with cancer. Len is survived by his wife of 63 years Barbara, children Linda (Scott), Andrea, Bruce (Lee-Ann) and grandsons Logan, Sean, Jack and Nolin.
Len was born in Leroy, Saskatchewan and lived there until he enlisted in the Navy at 19 years old. He travelled the world on the HMCS Ontario, and it was during this time he got his recognizable forearm tattoos; one in Hawaii and one in Panama. He met Barbara and they married in 1960 and settled in White Rock, BC. They began their family shortly thereafter. In 1979 the family relocated to Victoria.
Len was employed by the Department of Highways Centerline Branch, the Department of Highways Traffic Branch and the District of Saanich. He retired in 1993, and in 1997 he and Barbara moved to Nanoose Bay. Keeping active, healthy and involved was a priority for Len, and in his 70's he spent four years guiding for Rogue River Outfitters based out of Mayo, Yukon. He loved the Yukon and enjoyed the beauty and wilderness he experienced on his trips there.
Len was a dedicated husband and family man and an avid recreational outdoorsman. He valued family, had a strong work ethic, and embodied loyalty, honesty and leadership. He was passionate about curling, fishing, hunting, conservation and fostering the next generation's interest in the outdoors.
He was generous with his time, skills and energy as a volunteer. In his retirement years, Len belonged to and volunteered for many clubs, including the Duncan Motocross Track, PQFGA, PQFG Henry Range, QB Streamkeepers, MVIHES, Ducks Unlimited Canada, and Fishing Forever. He also spent time volunteering in several local long-term care homes. Len really enjoyed the Oceanside Generals Junior Hockey Club and was passionate about volunteering for them and attending games - both home and away. Always a smile, and always a helping hand, Len was happiest when he was contributing. He was humble, kind, charismatic and very much appreciated by all who met him.
Len had a special fondness for dogs and owned many over the years, providing a loving home for many seniors and rescues. He could often be found walking along the Parksville boardwalk or his Nanoose neighbourhood with a leashed friend or two.
Words cannot express our gratitude to the nursing staff at Oceanside Hospice at Trillium for their care and compassion during Dad's stay. Thank-you.
