December 23, 1934 - April 1, 2020
Leif Kaergaard Sorensen passed peacefully in his sleep on April 1, 2020. Born on December 23, 1934 in Grenaa, Denmark, he was one of ten children.
Following the footsteps of his brothers, he immigrated to Canada as a young man, first settling in Kitimat BC, where his skills as a carpenter where put to use building homes in the new town. He moved to Vancouver where he met and married the love of his life Billie Berger. They settled in Surrey BC where they raised a family of three boys.
Leif continued in the construction business working together with his brother Hardy. In 1973 the family moved to Sooke BC, where they took over operations of Sunny Shores Resort and Marina building it into a popular holiday resort for tourists and many loyal local customers. Leif may be best known for his creation of "Sookie Sam" the log man mascot used to promote the facilities. He was also able to follow his dream of sailing as he took on the project of building a 30 ft. sailboat named BILEIF.
After many years at Sunny Shores it was time to retire so Leif and Billie built a new home in North Saanich from which they based many holiday travels around the world and sailboat trips around the Gulf Islands. The happy couples final years together were in a small home they had renovated in Sidney. Leif was predeceased by his wife Billie and leaves his sons Steven (Laura), Bruce (Louise) and Jeff and his grandchildren Katie, Chelsea, Jamie, Dane and Camille. He will be missed by his family and friends in Denmark, California and BC.
A celebration of Leif will be held at a later date.
