Leena Kaarina Koivula (nee Pasanen) passed away peacefully in her sleep after a brief battle with a rare type of cancer.
Leena was born in Finland and lived there with her children and then husband until 1974, when they immigrated to Canada – first to Kitimat BC, then Gold River BC and finally in 1980 to Campbell River. After raising her children, she began her career as Custodian for several schools with School District 72. She retired at age 60.
Leena is predeceased by her parents and half-sister Henna and her half-brother Väinö. She is very much missed and loved by her surviving daughter Jaana (Don), sons Pekka and Antti; as well as brother Risto (Grazyna) in Finland and sisters here in Canada, Aune, Liisa (Vern) and Elvi; grandchildren Paula (Marc), Alexandra (Frank), Davin (Sarah) and Hailey; great grandson, Grant; and numerous nieces, nephew, cousins and friends who were like family.
Leena was known to live life to the fullest.
She loved nature and filled her time with mountain climbing around the Island, hiking, camping, kayaking, skiing, dancing, Tai Chi, and traveling to Hawaii.
At age 60 she took snowboarding lesson and in her 70’s she loved skydiving and zip lining. She was a caring person who fiercely loved life.
She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Leena was an active member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church here. Memorial services will follow this summer or once Covid restrictions are lifted.Obituary
