In loving memory ~
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Laura on May 17th at Comox Valley Hospital.
Laura was pre-deceased by her mother Patricia. She is survived by her father Chuck, stepmother Nina, brother Tom (Angela), stepbrother Curtis and stepsister Kerry. Nephews Steven, Scott, and niece Gracie. Step-nephews Justin and Michael. Also, many relatives in Alberta and Saskatchewan.
Laura was an amazing child. She was born with meningocele spina bifida and hydrocephalus. She was not expected to live long nor be able to even walk. She beat the odds and began to walk as she approached age 4. She learned to ride a bike at age 7. She joined 4H and won the trail ride at age 11. She joined sea cadets at 13 and marched with the band in Victoria Day parade. At 18 after graduating high school, she completed a cooking course at Camosun College. She worked as a cook in Bamfield and Victoria until her body began to break down.
She volunteered at the Women's Centre and led classes on dealing with chronic pain. She volunteered at the SPCA until she was confined to a wheelchair. At age 40 she became epileptic and shortly after that was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis.
During the past three years, Laura spent many months in hospital - but never lost her fighting spirit.
We wish to extend a thank you to the many Doctors and Nurses and medical staff at Comox Hospital for their excellent care. Also, to her family Doctor, Dr. T. Daws and to the many care aids from VIHA.
Special thanks to her many friends who helped brighten her days with visits and phone calls.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the SPCA in Laura's memory.
There will be a Celebration of Life at a later date.
