It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of Lachhman Singh Sanghera. He died peacefully while surrounded by his loved ones at Surrey Memorial Hospital on November 10, 2020.
He is predeceased by his parents, Naranjin Singh and Harnam Kaur; his brothers, Darshan, Mohinder, and Bunta; and sister, Gurmeet. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Gurdail Kaur; his children, Jaspal, Jazz, Rajinder (Malcolm) and Satbinder; his sister, Parkash; and by his large, extended family.
Born in Bilga, India, he first emigrated to England with his wife in 1953 and later, in 1964, moved to the Cowichan Valley where he began his life in
Canada working at the Honeymoon Bay Mill, while also baling hay by hand at March's Farm.
He apprenticed as an electrician at the mill, and, once he got his credentials from BCIT, began his electrical contracting company, which became well-known in the Cowichan area. In the early 70's, he bought and ran the Lake Theatre, while still working as the local electrician. Although he retired in his early 70's, he continued offering electrical advice well into his retirement.
As a long-time resident of Lake Cowichan, he was a member of the Elks club, Lions club, and the Legion. He participated in the Lake Days Parade as a Lion's member and he lit the annual Christmas tree in town for many years.
After residing in Lake Cowichan for 50 years, he and his wife moved to Surrey, BC to be closer to their children and extended family.
Dad had a gentle soul, a quiet strength, and a sense of optimism which continued through to the end. He was never afraid to take risks in life and was always moving forward. He found happiness in the joys of his family and friends and by opening his home to them. His easy-going nature and smile always made you feel welcome. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
A funeral service was held at Riverside Funeral Home in Delta, BC followed by a prayer service at the Gurdwara Sahib York Center in Surrey on November 19th, 2020.
