Kathleen May "Kay" Charter (nee Davies)

November 20, 2017

Kathleen May (Kay) Charter (nee Davies) passed away November 20, 2017 at her home in Courtenay, BC at the age of 105.

She will be dearly missed by her daughter, Laraine; grandchildren Pamela (Gordon), Coretta (Scott), Clayton (Jacqueline), Diane (Steve), and David; great grandchildren, Chloe, Anthony, Aidan, Dylan, Kyra, Ashleigh, Todd, Lauren, Benjamin, Dawn and Robert, as well as many dear friends.

She is also survived by 7 nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren, and was predeceased by her parents, two brothers, George and Ernest, her son, Dennis and son-in-law, Barry.

Kay was born in Shifnal, Shropshire, England, and immigrated in 1913 to Alberta, where her father had set up a homestead near Halkirk. Her early years were spent in nearby Gadsby, until 1925, when the family moved to Cloverdale BC. She graduated high school there and began working at the Bank of Montreal.

She was married in April 1941, and she and her husband, Ed, lived and worked in Vancouver, Clinton, Penticton, Armstrong, and Vernon, where they remained until 1967. During that time, she owned and operated the Credit Bureau of Vernon, was active in many organizations and served on the Vernon City Council.

She later moved back to Vancouver, and eventually settled in Burnaby, where she was again active in many organizations, including the Mormon Church, which she joined in 1970. She loved to travel, and during her retirement, took several cruises and visited countless destinations throughout the world.

Kay was truly an inspiration to all those who knew her, as a successful businesswoman, loyal friend and loving mother and grandmother. She approached life with an optimistic attitude and spirit of adventure, and never shied away from a challenge or the opportunity to take on any new endeavour.

The family wishes to express its gratitude to the Home Support and medical staff in Courtenay for their care and kindness, and special thanks to her volunteer visitors who brought enjoyment and stimulating conversation into her life in her final days.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, December 4th at 1:00 pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 5280 Kincaid St., Burnaby BC.

Memorial donations in Kay's honour may be made to a charity of one's choice.
