March 16, 1937 - February 9, 2020
Kate Phillips passed away peacefully at Nanaimo Hospital, Palliative Care Unit on February 9, 2020. Kate was born on March 16, 1937 in Elmshorn, Germany. Her father, Gustav had lived several years in the US as a young man and always dreamed to return to North America. As a result, Kate immigrated with her parents and sister to Canada in 1952, settling in Edmonton, Alberta.
She married Karl Wulf in Edmonton. They were an enterprising pair, and with their three children left Edmonton and purchased a large farm near Clyde, Alberta. In addition to running the farm, that included a large herd of cattle, they purchased the Clyde Hotel that they operated themselves. The family moved to Parksville in 1966. Although Kate and Karl separated a few years later, they remained friends.
Kate had an adventurous life, filled with travel. She married Victor Williams and they drove to Mexico in their RV every winter for about 28 years, going as far as Guatemala on one trip. They returned home to Parksville every March and enjoyed camping, boating and fishing. We all loved to hear stories of their adventures, along with a glass of their homemade wine. The grandkids have fond memories of visiting Oma and Vic and going fishing.
A few years after Vic passed away, Kate met Edward Phillips and found love again. They too enjoyed travelling that included a trip to Alaska in an RV for their honeymoon and trips to Mexico, Cuba and cruises.
Kate is predeceased by husband Victor Williams and most recently Edward Phillips. She is survived by her children Douglas, Katherine (Phillip) and Clinton; three grandchildren and six great grandchildren who will miss their GG. Kate will also be missed by her niece Susan Golleck, step-daughter Jillian (Grant), friend Nancy Whelan who "stood up for her twice" and many others - near and far.
A warm thank you to Mom's neighbours and friends at Baker Properties, the Lutheran Church, Pastor Mark, Dr. Desai and staff at the Medicine Shop for all their care and concern over the years. As well, to the kind and caring staff at the Palliative Care Unit.
A memorial service will be held at the Lutheran Church, 795 Island Highway, Parksville, with reception following on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers a donation to a charity of your choice may be made in honour of Kate.
