Much loved wife, mother, sister, aunt, sister in law and friend, Julianne Dostal (nee Barker) born Vancouver BC October 27, 1941, died peacefully in Nanaimo Regional General Hospital March 8, 2019.

She was predeceased by her mother Clare, father Arthur and her brothers Arthur Jess, Timothy, Carl and sister in law Ev Lim.

Julianne leaves behind her husband Karel, son James, grandchildren Liam, Hayden and Lyric; sisters Ellinore Barker (Bill Gilbert) and Susanne Barker (Les Peterson). She will also be missed by her sister in law Valerie Barker, nieces and nephews Martin Gilbert, Amy Barker, Jennifer Barker Stevenson, Jess Barker, Shayne Barker, Sherman Barker and their partners, spouses and children plus her many friends on the island and other parts of BC.

Julianne attended the University of British Columbia, Selkirk College and the University of Victoria and began teaching in Cranbrook BC. Upon returning to the coast, she spent the rest of her career teaching in Port Alberni BC. In the 1980s she and Karel moved from Sproat Lake to Qualicum Beach and eventually to Parksville.

As a young woman Julianne traveled extensively in Europe. Upon her retirement from teaching she and Karel spent many happy winters in Palm Springs, California.

She was a talented artist and an avid reader who could be relied upon for intelligent, lively discussions about events at home and abroad.

She will be greatly missed.

A family memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the BC Lung Association, 2675 Oak St. Vancouver, V6H 2K2.
