It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our brother John Mayer. John died peacefully at Vancouver General Hospital on August 30, 2018 after a long struggle with complications arising from Type I Diabetes.
John was predeceased by his beloved mother Prem in 1994 and is survived by his sisters Anita (Frank) and Leila (Gord); brothers Joseph, Andrew (Helen) and Krishan (Alminda); his father Bhagwan (Gail) and his large extended family.
John was born at the Chemainus Hospital on Vancouver Island in 1962 and spent his school years primarily in the Cowichan Valley. He went on to study business at Malaspina College in Nanaimo before moving to Vancouver in the 1980s where he spent the rest of his active life. For many years he was a dedicated personal trainer who used his incredible knowledge of health and fitness to help so many of his clients achieve and surpass their personal fitness goals.
John was an avid tennis player who spent countless, joyful hours hitting balls on the courts at Kits Beach. He was a lover of all things Latin including Mexican food, salsa dancing and the Spanish language.
John was a fighter who stood toe-to-toe with diabetes his whole life. Near the end, and true to his nature, John made a decision on his own terms to discontinue his fight and he died peacefully surrounded by family.
His family are grateful to the amazing healthcare professionals who provided care to John over the years and who made his last days a little easier. For their support and friendship, we are also grateful to the management, staff and friends at the private club where John worked as a personal trainer.
A beloved son, brother, uncle, colleague and friend, John will be greatly missed by those who he leaves behind. Memories of his humour, strength and occasional good-natured crustiness will reside in our hearts and
The family ask that in lieu of flowers anyone wishing to do so please consider a donation to the Canadian Diabetes Association or a charity of choice in John’s memory.
