In loving memory ~
Our Loving Dad and Opie,
went to be with his Lord on April 26, 2025.
John was born in Moscow, Russia, Nov 20, 1929, to Aron and Maria and was the 8th of 12 children. Due to political unrest the family immigrated to Glenbush, Saskatchewan when he was 4 months old. In 1946, the family moved to Elm Creek, Manitoba. Where he worked on the family farm until 1949 when he ventured out and moved to Black Creek, BC.
This is where he met the love of his life Helen Penner, marrying her in the spring of 1952. John and Helen walked in harmony for 70 years until Helen passed away in 2022. They shared a love for God and family and were an inspiring example for many. John enjoyed life. He had a great work ethic, loved sports, fishing and family vacations. He had a gentle spirit and a quick sense of humor.
John started his working life planting trees, logging and worked for 35 years at the Campbell River pulp and paper mill as a millwright.
John passed away at the age of 95 in the presence of family and is survived by his daughters Gloria Cashman (Gary), Brenda Nelson (Bob), 4 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He also has 2 sisters and 1 brother residing in Manitoba.
A special thank you to the Casa Loma staff and the many friends he shared his days with. John especially enjoyed the bus outings, bean bag toss and the socializing.
Appreciation to the Doctors and nursing staff in the purple group on 3A at the Comox Valley Hospital for your compassion as you cared for John and supported the family in his final days.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to a charity of your choice.
A Celebration of Life will be held on May 24, 11 am at the United Mennonite Church, 2277 Enns Road, Black Creek.
