August 19, 1937 - November 22, 2021
John Edward Burton, 84, of Heriot Bay, Quadra Island British Columbia passed away peacefully on November 22, 2021 at the Campbell River Hospital.
John was born in Nottingham, England on August 19, 1937 to Elsie and Len Burton. He had fond childhood memories of time spent with cousins Mike and Pete Le Comte, and Yvonne Ramsay in Ludlow and the Shropshire Hills. He left school at age 15 to work on a farm on the Isle of Man, and then did his National Service with the British Army 1957-1959. John taught himself welding and machining, and later ran two small engineering firms in North Wales. He immigrated to Calgary, Canada in 1980, then moved to Quadra Island in 1982, where he worked as a Millwright for Walcan Seafoods for many years. John loved the people and places of Quadra Island, his home of nearly 40 years.
John had many interests, including model engineering, wrought iron work, firearms (he was a long-time member of the Campbell River Gun Club), sailing, cooking, painting, walking, and reading (he always enjoyed spending time at the Quadra Island Library). His wry, quick wit often surprised and delighted, and though he was sometimes a man of few words, his friends knew of his kindness, generosity, and loyalty. He had a voracious appetite for learning - his bookshelf was filled works of history, technical matters, and classics such as works by Thoreau, Joyce, and Twain.
John is survived by his children William and Julie, and by their children.
John's family would like to thank Mike and Lindsay Gibbs and the wonderful doctors and staff of the Campbell River Hospital, where he received such amazing and compassionate care in the past two months.
