This is our Dad... an incredible mountain of strength who could always fix anything, mastermind a crafty solution and forever protect his family. Our Dad, who our mother often called a cantankerous old sod" and who was lovingly nick named, "Grumpy Grandad", by his amazing five grandchildren, Amy, Heather, Steven, Jennifer & Megan and his six (soon to be seven) great grandchildren. Our Dad, who taught his three kids, Mark (Lynda), David (Suzanne) & Val (Mark), independence, determination and incredible perseverance. Our Dad, who has always had fire in his soul, adventure in his heart and the desire to travel and explore. Our Dad, who had a whole story to tell about life in England with his two fabulous brothers, Robert (Carole) and Alan (Joan). And our Dad, who adored our mother, Miriam, beyond belief, who worshiped the ground she walked on and who has finally been reunited with the love of his life.
On Christmas night, our beautiful father slipped away peacefully. He rested comfortably knowing his oldest son, Mark, was there with him holding his hand while he released his last breath. Dad knew that his three kids adored him, that we were safe and we would be fine with all that he taught us.
Dad had been tired for some time and honestly, completely lost without the guidance of our Mom. He tried his best, he tried very hard despite the ravages of cancer, dementia and truthfully, a broken heart. Even on Christmas Day we witnessed his strength and efforts to rally giving us a glimpse of his charismatic smile, a flash of his beautiful brown eyes and a squeeze of his hand. In the end he knew who we were and his journey ended on a beautiful Christmas night. His sister in law, Carole, said it best..."Your Dad will get the best Christmas gift ever as he will once again be with your Mom".
Blessed be our Dad, an amazing husband for our Mom, a Grumpy Grandad, a strong older brother and an Uncle.
As per Dad's wishes, there will be no formal service but rather a quiet gathering of family & friends on the west coast of Vancouver Island in the spring time in the sunshine surrounded by ocean mist.
Love them while you have them.
