Jean Selby

Jean Selby of Campbell River, BC, died of cancer on January 23, 2019. To the end, she enjoyed her life, visiting with her friends and family, watching her favourite shows, and sweet- talking everybody for as much ice cream as she could.

Born in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, in 1939, Jean moved to Vancouver Island at age two with her parents, Emma and Henry Ziolkowski, and her sisters, Florence and Alice. She grew up in Courtenay, graduating from Tsolum High School and marrying Edward Selby in 1958. Throughout her life, she maintained close ties with her sisters and their families, her brothers George and Wayne and their families, and the Selby family.

Jean had a talent for numbers and a warm, friendly personality, a combination that led her to an award-winning career in banking as a loans officer and branch manager. She put her heart and soul into taking care of her clients, customers, and staff, and she always had a quip ready to lighten the atmosphere. Jean was all about giving to everyone in her life. We used to tease her with the nursery rhyme, "Friday's child is loving and giving," because it was the absolute truth.

Her interests included gardening, travel, reading, knitting and crafts-she contributed suitcases filled with handmade outfits and toys for the Angel Tree-but above all else, she treasured her lifelong friends and her family.

Predeceased by her husband, Edward, and her son, Tom, she is survived by her daughter, Blaise; brother George Ziolkowski and sister-in-law Vicki; brother Wayne Wortman and sister-in-law Shelly; brother-in-law Don Selby and sister-in-law Nettie; and sister-in-law Georgina Spies; along with numerous beloved nieces and nephews and their families; and cherished friends.

No formal services will be held, but the Discovery Harbour Care Centre will include a memorial for Jean in their open celebration of life held February 28 at two o'clock.
