Jean McMillan

It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Jean McMillan. (nee Macdonald).

Jean was predeceased by her husband Jack of 60 years, and her brothers Jock, Arthur, Colin and Hughie. She is survived by her son Jim (Vika), daughters Sheina (Rob) and Susan (Roger), grandchildren Terry, Alycia (Scott), Lauren, Jay and Avery and great granddaughter Asa Mae, as well as sister-in-law Sharon Macdonald and many loving nieces and nephews.

Jean was born in Kincolith, a tiny Nisga'a First Nations village situated on the north coast of British Columbia. Her father, who was a physician and her mother, raised four sons with Jean, the youngest and their only daughter. She resided in Kincolith until 11 years of age, when she traveled to Vancouver to attend school, where she lived with her aunt.

Jean and her family eventually relocated to Qualicum Beach where the Macdonalds raised their children on their newly acquired farm. Her love of animals was evident at this age when she raised and tended to turkeys, sheep, cows and chickens.

Jean met her future husband Jack while fishing at the beach below her home. Kindred spirits, they eventually married on September 25th, 1948 and purchased property adjacent to her parents. Jack, who was a logger, sawmill operator and later a commercial fisherman, also built their home and barn. The farm became a special place surrounded with family as well as the animals she loved.

Jean had a passion for fishing, gardening, baking and cooking. She also rode horses and belonged to the Silver Spur Riding Club and the Pony Club. In later life, she established a kennel where she bred, raised and sold Shetland sheepdogs. Several of her dogs became champions establishing her reputation as a successful business woman.

Jean, who is dearly missed, was fortunate to remain in her home throughout her final days, with the dedicated support of her family and care team. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to her special personal caregivers, as well as the support workers from VIHA, home nursing and Dr. van der Weyde, who spent many years as her physician.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 pm on Sunday, April 7th, 2019 at Yates Memorial Services, 1000 Allsbrook Rd., Parksville. For those who wish to honor Jean, in lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the local branch of the SPCA.
