June 22, 1938 - April 28, 2021
Macfie, James R. (Jim) passed away peacefully, April 28, 2021 at the age of 82 after a short time in a Care Home.
Jim was born July 22, 1938 in Halifax, N.S. He moved to B.C. at an early age with his family and enjoyed several moves, to the cities of Victoria and North Vancouver.
As a boy, he enjoyed many camping trips with his brother David and sister Rosalie and their parents at Qualicum Beach. Mornings were spent salmon fishing with his Dad, and in the afternoons, he could be found on the banks of the Qualicum River fishing for Bullheads.
At age 17, the family moved to Ireland and Jim entered a five year, Engine Fitter Apprenticeship. It was here where he learned about life. Enabled him to toil so hard, overcome strife, and arrive punctually.
He returned to Vancouver in 1960, for just a short time, before signing on as an Engineer in the Merchant Navy. Jim enjoyed seeing much of the world and had many tales to tell.
In 1966, Jim left the sea and moved to Nanaimo to work at Harmac. He worked there as a Millwright for 32 years and retired in 1998.
During his early years in Nanaimo, he met his wife, Evelyn McNeil. They raised their daughter Naomi and son Chris, enjoying a lot of skiing in winters, and camping in summers.
Jim always had a passion for outdoor activity. He loved fishing, pointer dog training, and game bird hunting. He shared many pheasant hunting adventures with his brother David in Alberta. Many memories were made there including successes and screw-ups!
As a couple, Jim and Evelyn enjoyed many ski trips and traveled to Mexico, Hawaii and cruises in the Caribbean.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of 35 years, Evelyn. He will be lovingly remembered by daughter Naomi (Macfie) Stapleton, of Kelowna, BC, and her children Alicia (Brian) Benoit, Rachel (Chad) Kettner, and Mark Stapleton; son, Chris (Sheila) Macfie of Duncan, BC, and his children Andrew, Shelby, and Spencer; and 4 Great- Grandchildren Seth and Savannah Benoit; Everett and Evelyn Kettner. Also remembered by brother David (Mary) of Calgary, sister Rosalie McCarthy of North Vancouver and their families.
Jim loved his family. Jim loved his dogs. Also, his fishing buddies! Jim will be missed by all of us.
Our wonderful Dad and Grandpa will always be remembered for his love of family and friends! A kind gentleman, a helpful neighbor and a welcoming host to many memorable family gatherings.
