Hugh Edgar Chappell

February 15, 2019

Hugh Edgar Chappell, age 87, our beloved Dad, Grandfather, Husband, Uncle & Friend to many, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of February 15th at Nanoose Bay, Vancouver Island. Hugh was born in Vancouver, BC on February 6th, 1932 to George Norman Duncan(Black Watch Hghlndrs WW1) & Helen Mary (nee Hastings) Chappell, of Burnaby Lake, BC.

At 13, Hugh had lost both his oldest brother Harold (Seaforth/48th Hghlndrs WW2) in the war and then his parents shortly after. As was custom in those days he left school and went to work. First as a Whistle Punk, Chokerman, Cowboy, and then 45 years as a Mechanic on both the mainland and the Island.

In January 1957 he married our Mom, Evelyn Kay (nee Hayton) and they had three children, living in Vancouver, Coquitlam, Deep Bay & Union Bay. Spending either all his time with them coaching lacrosse, soccer and training them in life & self sufficiency, restoring his '33 Ford Coupe or taking the family camping & fishing, from BC to California, living by "enjoy it while you can, none of us are getting out of here alive", Strong words from a gentle man.

In 1996, Hugh reconnected with Doreen (nee Paul) & they were married in 2002, settling in Sorrento, BC, then finally back to the Island to be near his young Grandsons, where he truly enjoyed the time he had with them. He is survived & honoured by his children Roxanne (Van) Powell, Steven (Julie) Chappell, Bradley (Aleta) Chappell, his Grandsons Hayes & Cowan Chappell, his loving wife Doreen (nee Paul), son Darren (Lee) Joyner, daughter Jodi Joyner and all their children. As well by his younger brother Alan Chappell, nieces Brenda, Laurie, & nephew Gerry Chappell, all their children, and family across western Canada. He was preceded by his brother Harold, Mother & Father, sisters Margaret & Helen. There will be a memorial for our Dad in May this year, as he would have liked the weather more, here at the ranch on the Island. Family contact at rdangus@telus.net.
