September 9, 1935 - November 14, 2021
Horst Gerhard Schmidt, 86 years old, died peacefully on November 14th, 2021 while in residence at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Extended Care unit with his daughter Birgit by his side.
Horst was born September 9th 1935 in Riga, Latvia of German heritage to Johannes Friedrich Schmidt and Tatjana E. Von Huebschmann. Following the war in 1950, Horst and his family immigrated to Canada from Germany. They began their life in Canada in the community of New Sarepta, Alberta but eventually moved to the Cowichan Valley in 1956. Horst lived and worked in Port Alberni before marrying Lydia in 1963 then the couple settled to raise their family in Duncan.
Horst is survived by his three children: Serena (Robert), Birgit (Boyd), and Heidi (Ted). He is also survived by 5 grandchildren: Richard, Stephanie, Shannon, Elliot and Colin; and 5 great grandchildren: Blake, Lewis, Gemma, Hunter and Brooklyn.
He is recently predeceased by his brother George Schmidt (Karin) and is survived by his sisters: Ingrid (d. Stuart) and Heidi (Victor), and his brother Gerd (Susan). He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Horst will be dearly missed. He was known for his great memory and sense of humour, and he was always willing to lend a hand. He had a wonderful way with all animals. He truly was a brave, strong and kind man.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in honour of Horst may be made directly to the Duncan United Church, 246 Ingram St, Duncan, BC, V9L 1P4.
For those wishing to pay their respects, Visitation will be held from 12:00 - 2 pm on Thursday, November 18, 2021 as well as on Friday, November 19, 2021 from 10 pm- 12pm at Sands Funeral Chapel, Duncan, 187 Trunk Road, Duncan, BC.
A Funeral Service will be held at 2 pm on Friday, November 19, 2021 at Duncan United Church, 246 Ingram Street, Duncan, BC. Should you not be able to attend Service in person, a Zoom Link will be made accessible.
